Smartphones: Are They Really What You Need?

As a person who has had a number of smartphones in the past few years— from Palm Pilots that morphed into cell phones (that was certainly a blessing to not have to carry 2 devices- cell phone and Palm Pilot) to Samsung’s less than stellar BlackJack I (don’t even ask me about this one!) and now the iPhone which has a lot of pluses but some serious minuses too. It’s truly a dicey situation to find the perfect phone for you.
Locked? Unlocked? Locked is cheaper - sort of— but it’s tied to a 2 year contract. Unlocked— pay full freight but choose a 1 year plan or maybe (if you are lucky) a month to month one. The downside is that all features might not be available for the very pricey phone.

Dameon Welch-Abernathy uses the Nokia N95..

While I have been jonesing for a Nokia something— because I seem to have gone through a LOT of Nokia phones with great useability— they never had a great smartphone till now. However the one I want is not available in the US yet (sigh) and that’s not going to be anytime soon.

Talking to Damion Welch-Abernathy of the MobileWeblog.com , we had an email discussion about this very issue. In a recent post, he queries whether smart phones are really necessary — and got some interesting answers.

Apple iPhone — which I both love and feel really odd about

For me, I found that I have been to a couple events where I was able to post on the spot— or at least Twitter and Facebook a couple of locations. Granted I was new to the iPhone and didn’t have every pw necessary to login to Flickr and all my different resources to send it viral but honestly, it was a blessing to get some things up there quickly. It won’t take my video easily since I like to edit that.. but I found that the abillity to text people was really handy and catching my blog online was fab when I was interviewing someone and starting part of the blog on the spot.

Check out Damion’s post and respond and let me know what you think. It’s a thoughtful question. Everyone’s needs are different. My wish list is a 3.0 mp camera, a fast connection, easy qwerty keyboard for texting and posting to my blog and being able to send viral.

Now.. where’s that iPhone book I bought to learn all the “ins” and “outs” of this device— and when can I snatch the time to read it and learn.

See ya on the web
