Easter Sunday Doesn’t Just Mean Chocolate: Get a Hippity Hop Buzz from the Applejack Rabbit Cocktail!

You know I love new and different drinks — it’s always about something different.
While you might be pouring some champagne for Easter Sunday, you might want to consider serviing a cocktail or two for the day. After all, it’s a bit different and it’s fun.
Consider it a sophisticated spin to what is often a children oriented family holiday.
In the WSJ.com column, How’s Your Drink?”, , writer Eric Felton’s tale for today was ” The Apple of Their Eye” — a bit of history on Apple Brandy AKA Apple Jack. Felton gives you a great piece of fast-moving and eye-opening history of Prohibition and how Apple Jack was a hot commodity during those times. As Felton uses the historical references to place Apple Jack into a time of great literary and political steam, he states it was also known as Jersey Lightning. Aged about 2 years in wood, this brandy runs about 80-100 proof and thus it justifies the lightning attribution- a real kick.

Out of this interesting column, came a perfect cocktail (or two) for Easter.
AppleJack Rabbit (a spin on the Easter Bunny — duh)
It has some unusual ingredients but the sweetness of the maple syrup takes the edge off the Apple Jack (and some fire out of the lightning) to make it a lovely cocktail for Easter Brunch or Dinner.

1½ oz applejack
½ oz fresh orange juice
½ oz fresh lemon juice
½ oz maple syrup
Shake with ice and strain into a stemmed cocktail glass.

If you are looking for something quite simple there is the AppleJack Cocktail courtesy of Drinkmixer.com

AppleJack Cocktail
1 1/2 oz Applejack® brandy—
4 dashes grenadine syrup
1 oz fresh lemon juice

Pour the Applejack brandy, grenadine and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker
half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, strain into a cocktail glass, and serve.

Now that’s as easy as it gets unless you drink it on the rocks— which makes dinner a bit superfluous.

Personally I like the AppleJack Rabbit. It’s got a real party feel to it, but the AppleJack Cocktail would be quite similar to a Cosmopolitan if you did a substitution of the AppleJack for the Vodka in a Cosmo, added in the other typical Cosmopolitan ingredients including the grenadine and voila- instant — and very different flavor

If you try this, do let me know. I am dying to try this out

Happy Holiday..
