Singer Kimberly Korn Talks About Her Career and Experience as ASCAP Conference Blogger!

Kimberly Korn isn't a name you might be aware of yet, but just wait, She's the firecracker waiting to pop and once you hear both her podcast and also her mp3 stream, you will realize ,"wow!, This girl is talented!" -- and driven, ambitious and more talented than you realize. This young woman is fierce about getting her music out there and she is ready to fight her way out of the pack and create her own personal style and presentation.

Calling herself driven is an apt descriptio. This girl has been acting and singing about 5 and then got into the Joffrey Ballet at 14 and from there, Kimberly Korn moved forward towards her dream of singing and never looked back. Korn describes her music as an evolved "Garbage" (Kourtney Love) and even with a twist if Kate Nash tossed in for telling it like it is and one has to agree that Kimberly is definitely all that and more!

Interview with Kimberly Korn

Excerpt from Kimberly Korn's post for the ASCAP EXPO Blog
Somewhere (A Placement for Us): Making it in Music Licensing Recap Part One!
by EXPO Staff April 23. 2010 11:42 AM
"Somewhere (A Placement for Us): Making it in Music Licensing" panel was one of the most hotly-tipped panels of the EXPO thus far. We sent three of our roving bloggers to offer their takes on it, all Rashomon style! Here's a take from Kimberly Korn:
A common question many musicians have is "How do I get my music on film, TV or videogames?" According to today's panel, it's easier than you think, especially in this digital age. Jonathan McHugh, SVP of Soundtracks & Supervision at Island/Def Jam, suggested contacting students at film schools. He also recommends going to film festivals and speaking with up-and-coming film directors. Reading trade journals and online movie databases such as Hollywood Reporter, Indywire and IMDB.com will also give musicians an idea of film and TV shows currently in production or soon to be in production.

So how do you know what music supervisors are looking for? Lynn Grossman, owner of Secret Road Artist Management & Music Services, as well as the music supervisor for House, says to pay attention to what the media is using. For instance, if you want your music on a specific TV show, watch the show and see what genre the show tends to go for. Also, you want your songs to be about broad topics. McHugh says you don't want to submit a song called "Love Song for Steve." You want to submit a song abut love in general.

Once you get a placement, how do you use the placement to market yourself for other opportunities? Steve Schnur, Executive of Music at Electronic Arts and President of Artwerk Music Group, suggests getting a publicist or being your own marketer by sending links out to everyone you know to tell them about your placement. Once you start getting placements, music supervisors and labels start to take notice of how commercial your music is. Another suggestion is to get a song plugger.
