CONTROL, Anton Corbijn's Film About JOY DIVISION

New to DVD is CONTROL, a nine time film festival award winner, including three wins earned at the Cannes Film Festival,

was directed by acclaimed music photographer Anton Corbijn and loosely based on Curtis' wife's book, Touching From A Distance.

It stars two-time Academy Award® nominee Samantha Morton (In America, Minority Report), Alexandra Maria Lara (Downfall) and relative newcomer Sam Riley (24 Hour Party People).

This movie is a shot in black and white -- akin to a documentary and is more docu-drama since it's loosely based on the book by Curtis' wife. It's about the rise of the punk genre of music (David Bowie's music is a huge impetus to Curtis from the outset from the Glam-rock stages).
What's interesting is that Riley looks remarkably like Curtis in some ways and has managed to come across with the inwardly downward spirel of depression that would drive Curtis to suicide.

May 18, 1980 was a gloomy day for punk fans alike when Ian Curtis took his life. The English band, Joy Division, brought a unique sound that made a strong impact on the punk faction during the late 70s and Ian Curtis will be forever recognized for his key role in that.

Although the band went on to become the group New Order after his suicide, CONTROL examines Curtis' personal ups and downs while with Joy Division that made a lasting impression on the music world.

While many might not remember Joy Division, there are a number of key, cutting edge musicians (Guy Forsyth for example) who followed Joy Division and are aware of the effect that Joy Division and Curtis had on the development of punk rock-- and the eventual evolution of Joy Division to become the New Order after he died.

It's a powerful film, at times depressing but extremely compelling. Not for the times when you are down, but when you want something that shows the inner demons of a man who was driven-- but where is the question.
