Kauai Photo Essay: Sunrise to Almost Sunset, the Aloha Spirit Lives On!

There is one constant on Kauai--rain! It's the rainiest of all the islands and Waimea Canyon gets over 400 inches a year. One year I visited here, we had rain-- and lots of it-- in April and it didn't stop.. nor did it stop us from going north and south, east and west to find some sunshine someplace. You just keep moving around.

Sunrise after a rainstorm

Every night this week, we have had rain at night--rocking hard on the roof. We have had at least drizzle and at some points downpours during the day. Here's a few photos of that I managed to snap quickly.

Sunrise #2. this is with more color and as the sun was rising fast.

We packed light for sunshine and while we were ok.. I wish I had packed a hoodie, more tank tops and the shorts I had been promising to buy myself- along with some hiking shoes (Think Keen or Teva) for the waterfall seekers.

Here's a rainbow on the ocean during a sunny rainstorm.. look hard at the sides. It's hard to see it in the middle of the photo.

Found this painting on the side of a store in old-town Kapa'a.. and it's truly indicative of the lifestyle and general attitude of the people in Kauai.. friendly and welcoming.

The best illustration of this was Thursdays final game of the NBA play-offs, We headed off to a restaurant/bar that had 5 tvs and was full of locals and tourists--split pretty evenly between Laker and Celtic fans (right down to team colors and hats) and it was like a huge party! Hoots, yells, screams and moans were heard as each team made or blew a score. While the Lakers won, so did we-- as we had made some friends in the second half of the game and we had a great evening. ( check out the TomKat Grill in Koloa town for 5 or 6 TVs in the bar, a good bar and hefty portions .
