Kauai North Shore Expedition part 3: Shopping & Beaching It
By the time we hit Hanalei-- and it was a good hour trek north, the weather had cleared up and was finally sunny for the first time in all our trips heading into Hanalei.

Stopping at the Taro Fields overlook.. photo #1

Photo of Taro Fields Overlook #2.. it was incredible there
One of the best parts is the view you get of the valley as you roll down the hill (not literally-- you are in the car) and see the spread of the valley, taro ponds fields and this incredible bay. The pull-off to be able to snap a photo has been shut down and since there was a fire truck (just cruising the city) was ahead, there was no way to cross that line.
Besides it's a one lane bridge that needs to be crossed (not one lane each one-- ONE lane period-- so everyone takes turns).

Waterfall on the mountains of Hanalei where it was raining.
Hanalei is the location for South Pacific (the movie) and others as well. It's interesting that the town-- a little tiny town is virtually walkable from almost all highly residential areas.
We saw kayakers up the Hanalei river and the town hadn't changed much. Pulling into the Ching Young Village shopping center of tourist stores +local stores was carefully scoured for tees and tops and then across the street to the dress stores and the other shops to check out. Bought more tees & tanks at Bubbas. Did you know if you wear a Bubbas tee into one of their restaurants, your drinks are free? There are lots of little boutiques- some are packed with stuff like surf gear and others are more for women and then there are the art galleries bcause Hanalei is home to many artists.
Looking around for food we wound up at the place I remembered had awesome food and a bar too. I had tried to send mobile photo uploads to facebook of our lunch at the School House Gourmet Deli Restaurant but they didn't go through and they didn't save to my phone either. (boo hiss).. I had one of their great cocktails plus we split some fish and chips (made from ahi!) and some artichoke dip toasted baguettes because we were starving.
We walked farther down to more stores and checked out more stores. Burnt out on shopping- (what moi? How can that be you might think. I was not the shopping fanatic on this trip. REALLY!) We decided to head over to the bay and check it out. We wound up near the Hanalei River for a parking spot

Hanalei Bay photo series:

Hanalei Bay

Towards Napili Coast.

Hanalei Beach & Mountain view

Another view of Hanalei Bay.
This bay is huge! It's great during the winter and it's the jumping off point for lots of sailing and also heading out west around the point to the Napili Point (accessible only by boat, helicopter or strenuous hiking) . It's also very tropical! While we were there, it drizzled and up the mountain it had substantial rainfall, hence the waterfall appearing on the side of the mountain. It also got very humid and it was 89 degrees outside..
A ton of locals were at the beach and lots of stores were closed.
We skipped Princeville entirely and waved goodbye to Kilauea .. I wished I could have gone back there.
