Nancy Lichtenstein has another report on NYFW Fall 2010 and this one is on Twinkle, a unique fashion presentation that's got a whimsical edge and definitely for those who want to walk that fine line between fashion and trend-- and have a sense of humor about it too.

The look at Twinkle was whimsical as usual, but for Fall 2010 the whimsy took a darker turn, like if the Disney princesses were stripped down to their original fairytale origins (what Disney seems to forget is that plumbing wasn't adequate in the Middle Ages). Actually, Hansel and Gretel was said to be the inspiration of the collection, and designer Wenlan Chia favored slender leggings or tights, often paired with an exaggerated hourglass shape on top that focused on the hips.

Standout themes included oversized sweater coats and vests with exaggerated collars (my favorite was this light grey car length coat that looked like the perfect thing for an incognito princess to wear)

and a bit of satiny texture (as seen on this jewel-toned tunic that in real life in fall in New York would need to be accompanied by one of the sweater coats).

It wasn't the most cohesive collection I've ever seen--there were a few just plain weird looks, like this black and white patterned...suit?... that looked like something out of the upcoming Alice in Wonderland movie

but there was enough substance there to hold the average fashionista's interest and this is one of the few lines I've seen lately where the clothing actually looks like you could run in it, which is necessary when you've got the Queen of Hearts chasing you shouting "off with her head!"

Hair was by John Ruidant of Redken and used Fabricate to create sideswept updos that continued the princess-on-the-run theme. Makeup was by MAC and featured smoky, ringed eyes paired with a deadly pale matte face and bloodless lips--pretty much how you'd really look if your wicked stepmother sent a hunter after you to bring her your heart on a plate?

Thanks to Nancy Lichtenstein for this incisive report on this new line. Obviously it's for the younger woman-- or those still very young at heart who still believe in Disney.
