Kauai Has a New Spirit: Koloa Rum Company Rocks the Gold In Miami
After much searching and a few wrong turns in finding it, we finally found the Koloa Rum Company. It had not been in any of the guidebooks I had found-- but that's because the company is only 8 months old --ditto the rum itself-- and it's definitely burning up the international scene with its' unique presentation of rum.

This lovely company has a white, gold and dark rum --all made with ingredients from Kauai. So it's special to this island and you can only buy it on this island to take with you. You cannot order it online-- or at least not yet.

We found the tasting room behind Gaylord's mansion on these huge grounds where you can have a genuine vintage train ride and even find a pottery studio..
The limited tastings are for 2 rums only -- of 1/2 oz each -- and you get a chance to create your own mai tai drink by learning how to pour a float--which the lovely Marla from Koloa Rum Company talks about in the video below

The best part about this rum --particularly the dark-- is the way a tiny sip swirls around your tongue and mouth and you can taste the different essences and flavors. While we concocted our own mai tais, the interesting part was learning how to do the float. (Hey David Brogan, we should talk about how to do that!)
This is one very cool brand and one you should be on the look-out for. It's only available in Kauai and you could/should check out their website for more information
This is a Hawaiian media video that features information on sugar plantations and also the Koloa Rum Company

We had a great time and I would have brought back several bottles of rum but the weight limit was going to blow me over into the pay for the privilege.
If you are heading to Kauai, do visit the Koloa Rum Company and you can check out their website here. You can get rum cakes of various size, rum fudge sauce and lots more!
Since Kauai became known during the Civil War for providing sugar since the South was embargoed, the industry became huge in the islands. However the first sugar mill was founded in 1779 by Captain Cook and it has been over 200 years of sugar production with various evolutions in production and development.
