Kauai Photo Essay: Smart Places to Check Out on Kauai and Online

Don't just hit Hilo Hattie for souvenirs or the usual touristy suspects-- particularly in Kauai. You should not leave without checking out Red Dirt Shirts, Island Soap and Candle Works and old-town Kapaa and other little towns that dot the coastline from Waimea in the west to Hanalei in the north. Here's a few on the southern end of the island.

In case you are looking for some place to eat that's reasonably priced, frequented by locals and has amazing food, check out the Tip Top Cafe (Motel and more) in Lihue. It's just off the main drag but it's definitely affordable and the range of food is amazing from early AM to late PM. Frommers calls it fine dining-- that's a stretch except for the truly unusual dishes (oxtail soup anyone?) but the plain jane atmosphere is made up by the great and very affordable lunches and breakfasts. Only the fool-hardy (or 19 year old boys playing sports) can really eat the double pancakes--banana or pineapple-- without feeling they don't need to eat for days. They are amazing--and about $5!!

We got there for breakfast and had their signature pancakes.

The Pineapple pancakes with the Guava and Pineapple Jam is absolutely delicious.
