In an incredible performance that earned her Golden Globe®, Emmy Award® and Screen Actors Guild Award® nominations, Academy Award® winner Holly Hunter (The Piano) stars as Detective Grace Hanadarko, a fast-living, hard-drinking, cynical forty-something who, despite being at the top of her field, takes struggle to a new level.

It all catches up to her when, after another night of too many drinks, she tragically kills a pedestrian with her car, forcing her, uncharacteristically, to ask God for help. Her prayers are answered by Earl; a scruffy, tobacco-spitting, unlikely "last-chance angel" who unfolds his wings to reveal his heavenly origins and pledges to help Grace get her life on the right path.

In the second season, Grace's life reaches its darkest point as she continues to embrace the edges of life while trying to forgive herself for her sister's death in the Oklahoma City bombing.

The series features an outstanding ensemble cast including Leon Rippy (Deadwood), Laura San Giacomo ("Just Shoot Me"), Kenneth Johnson ("The Shield"), Bokeem Woodbine (The Big Hit), Gregory Cruz ("Criminal Minds"), Dylan Minnette ("Prison Break"), Lorraine Toussaint ("Any Day Now") and Bailey Chase ("Las Vegas").

The series is very powerful. It's both dark and funny at the same time and it's incredible actors who perform give it a reality that's palpable and Earl is really there as the angel and so very real that others (like San Giacomo's character) realize that Earl is there. It's so intense, yet Hunter juggles this role like few can do. She's real as a cop and shows off the dark side easily while she uneasily accepts that Earl is real and "here to stay" to bring her into the light and set her life on the righteous path. This is not a religious series. It's about life, death, the things you do that take you down the wrong road and also the things you do that help not only yourself but also help others.
I love this series and each character becomes entwined in the others lives as well as burrowing into your psyche

I personally "dvr" this series and love seeing it. I find the characters interesting and the storylines are really intriguing and real. It appeals equally to men and women and this is a "must have" series.
