Adventure on Hawaii--Underwater Part 1! Guided Snorkeling Tour Is Killer Fun & Workout!

While I hunted and searched for a family-oriented adventure experience online and via guidebooks and people I know, some of stuff out there to do is done by a gazillion operators and it's hard to select the best ones. There are adventures or events that suck up an entire day or most of a day plus the drive back to wherever you are staying. Since I tend to be more of a water creature, I found an amazing adventure that was all about snorkeling and went beyond their description in the Fodor guideboook I had purchased (and the others I had checked out)

www.alohakauaitours.com is one place you should be checking out if you are into snorkeling. While we have snorkeled quite a bit over 7 years of visiting Kauai, there's a definite decrease in fish and some of our favorite spots had barely any fish. I wanted to see some spectacular fish and in an area I normally would not tackle alone or with my family. We chose this guided snorkeling tour because it was max of 6 people on this excursion and it was local.

Kailee Mo-- our tour guide

On each tour, the tour leader tells you about the snorkeling locations (either north or south shore); what you can expect to see; how to avoid damaging the environment; and how to snorkel and look good doing it. Following the tour leader (ours was Kailee Mu) she made it easy to see the fish and how and where to spot other types of fish you might ot usually see. The tour guides are comfortable and skilled at teaching anyone and everyone how to snorkel, even someone who is paraplegic.

Coral and fish.

With that information, I booked this tour for first thing in the AM because that's the best time to see fish Kailee's tour had 5 people (maximum of 6 is allowed) and we were given short wetsuits, snorkleing gear and fins that were specific to our personal sizes. While it's easy getting the wetsuit on when dry, think again when you are trying to get it off when wet-- it ain't so easy bruddah.

We started out at Lawaii beach in front of the noted Beach House restaurant which has a narrow but easily navigated entry via sand in the middle so that made entry and exit easy.
The fish were there.. not far out and really were very cool

Lots more fish were there but there were 3 cameras and we couldn't take photos fast enough to get them all -- plus the color of the water ( cyan) changes the colors of the fish that the eye sees as vivid hues into dull drab colors.

Here's me in all my snorkeling regalia. Wait till you see me after it's all over.

Here's three of us who were snorkeling on this tour.

Stay tuned for part 2! Tomorrow's post includes the second beach and sea turtles. While there were tons of fish, they scatter quickly when people are around but they were gorgeous. Also helps if you know HOW to work the camera you are using. 10 shots later, I found out what I was doing wrong. *ugh
